Cirrus – 17 Mar 2017

There are two seafood restaurants that are quite noteworthy at the moment for me – Cirrus, and Saint Peter. For me, I’d read more about Cirrus, but Saint Peter seemed to be the more interesting restaurant even though I didn’t know much about the history of the chef. In my Sydney visit, I wanted to go to Saint Peter more, but the location wasn’t ideal for a dinner due to limited public transport options. In the end, I settled for a brunch visit to Saint Peter, and chose dinner at Cirrus.

Firedoor – 16 Mar 2017

Firedoor. The story with Firedoor is that when it opened, I added it to my list. Communal tables, cooking with fire, what more could you want? But then it never really made the top of the list for some reason. A year or so later, I got linked an article which claimed Firedoor has one of the world’s best steaks and was expensive, and aged in its own kidney fat. That didn’t really get my curiosity going enough to bump it up either. It wasn’t until I was looking at the cost of booking Burnt Ends in Singapore that I realised, I don’t need to fork out three times as much for an expensive restaurant there, when I could get the “same” thing here for much less! And that’s how I finally went to Firedoor.

Saint Peter – 12 March 2017

I can’t remember exactly when Saint Peter started popping up on my radar, but its signature dish, oysters with blue scampi caviar, really caught my attention. Then once I saw the fish offal, I knew I had to go. However, I didn’t really arrange a dinner since I was more interested in their brunch since it was equally unusual, and I hoped that it would also be more accessible.

DeLish Expo/Latte Art Smackdown – 22 Jan 2017

I heard about DeLish expo late last year, and after discovering the early bird entry fee was only $10 to attend, I could afford to go, mainly for the latte art competition, but exploring the other stalls. I lost my sweet tooth ages ago, but desserts tend to be really pretty! However since I’m more of a coffee enthusiast at the moment (it’s “cheaper” than being a foodie at the moment), this will be primarily focused on the coffee.

Aunty Peg’s by PMC – 2016

I have this thing where I never, ever manage to blog about Melbourne. I have no idea why, I think it’s because it usually marks the end of a long trip and then I don’t ever find the time to write about it. So my last ditch effort is to make this single post about the most amazing place for coffee – Aunty Peg’s. It’s Proud Mary’s cellar door, a black coffee haven, and I was lucky enough to go during their Gesha showcase with different varietals!

I could say all sorts of lovely things about their coffees, but pictures are worth a thousand words 🙂

Neighbourhood BSM – 2016

With a few hours left of 2016, I figure I’d tidy this blog up a bit and squeeze a couple more posts in from my adventures earlier this year. One of my favourite new cafes (yes I’m heavily biased) is Neighbourhood by Sean McManus. He was absolutely awesome when I used to frequent Single O, and now he is even more awesome with his little hole in the wall!

Not only does he have his own oat milk, his espressos are quite different! I love them because I find they’re the perfect flavour – a filter profile with the punch of espresso. His hot chocolates look pretty awesome too!

So here’s a photo dump of coffees, a shiny machine, and a resident plant!

Spice Temple Sydney – 08 Feb 2016

It’s Chinese New Year. I hate Chinese food. I’m glad to be home. I needed to find a nice restaurant to book….

Spice Temple. Sure, why not. I can’t even take anything that’s even remotely spicy, but where else would I book on such an occasion?

I couldn’t help but be concerned that I wouldn’t like/couldn’t handle the food there, but it was the most fitting restaurant choice for the occasion. Plus I’d always wondered what was behind those lovely digital silk curtains every time I’d walked out of Rockpool Bar and Grill. Behind the heavy door were some stairs down and down and down… into a lovely space with the standard Rockpool Group reception, bar area, then the main dining room. It was super dark, but there was lighting at each table so you could see the food.

We opted for the Chinese New Year Banquet, categorised by each of the fortunes of the new year. The only one I didn’t manage to take good shots of were the Wealth dishes – cabbage and radish, and Sichuan style pickled cucumbers and shitake. Both pickles were slightly spicy (the cabbage and radish had an extra mound of some super hot stuff that I avoided) and so addictive! Who cares about a slight burning when things taste this good right from the start!

Salaryman – 5 February 2016

This new restaurant popped up on my feed and had a very tasty look prawn toast okonomiyaki as well as claims of really good ramen. So, I managed a short notice booking since I had nothing planned on my first night back in Sydney. I’m glad I went!
